Agreed - I'd rather have the author post an announcement saying "RL sucks right now but I will get back to this, I promise." Then take a few months off, and then do the damn thing properly.
I mean, I *do* understand about the muses just leaving you. But I also believe that as a writer, it's important to acknowledge that writing is *work*, and if you just sit down and do it, often the muse will return. Sure, you might have to rewrite it, or maybe that first newly written section might always feel awkward and suck in your eyes, but that's where a good beta or two comes in and saves the day.
As you can see, I have pretty strong opinions about this sort of thing. Finishing what you've started, in all walks of life, is a Big Thing with me. ;)
