BTW - I have found this to be a very interesting and thought-provoking conversation about warnings; if you aren't participating, you still might want to read it:
a discussion about warnings on fics, in
alliwantisanelf's journal. The reason I find it so interesting is that in writing and reading so much BDSM, I think the explicit, detailed warnings really ruin the element of surprise.
lostiawen and I have "agreed to disagree" about this in the past, and I've dutifully warned for rimming and snowballing and so on, but I hate it and feel like it either gives things away or spoils the build-up, OR focuses attention on the kink when, to me, the story isn't about the kink itself, but about the head games.
OTOH, I will not read non-con, character death, rape, torture, or mutilation. And I routinely skip mpreg and angst fics when I'm going through a period of depression. So I do like having some warnings...
I'm kind of wondering if it would be useful in any way to have writer's who felt like it post a thingy in their LJs asking people to GIVE THEM FEEDBACK ON THEIR WARNINGS.
I'll start, in case anyone wants to comment. ;)
1. Do you think I over-warn, under-warn, or you think the warnings on my fics are helpful and useful just the way they are?
2. Do you think the warnings on my fics have spoiled things for you, reading?
3. Do you think I should give fewer warnings on future fics, more warnings, or stay the same?
Warnings I have used: Bondage, Dominance/Submission, toy use, PWP, kink, humor, spanking, snowballing
