Mayday poem...

Spring

The reasons of the heart
as are capricious as butterflies
and as right.
Root down deep, stand tall,
and let love build a nest in your heart.

And now I am all a-flutter. I said I wasn't going to write fanfic anymore. I have been mainlining Avengers fics, but no bunnies have visited me. (Well. Maybe that *one* bunny...)

I'm supposed to be writing/finishing an original story today. Not molesting superheros. I need a bat to beat my brain into submission.

Mmmm... submission...

All right f-list = I need you!

I need ONE good, under 10k Arthur/Merlin fanfic. I'd prefer it if the guys are a bit older (and a bit smarter) than they seemed on the show. Contemporary AU is all right, just rec me soemthing GOOD.

Note: I am not looking to get into this fandom, I just think these guys might be the pairing-type I need for the new short story I'm working on and would like a reference. :)

HELP ME! Please? I'll give you cookies, or a pretty-boy-Friday post of your request!
salixbabylon: (Default)
So far my writing goals have not been working out. BUT - new month = new plan.

I am so thoroughly stuck on the steampunk thing, frustrated trying to plot out novel-length plots. So I think going back to the basics and writing some vignettes, flexing the writing muscles that are stiff and sore, getting *something* done rather than beating my head against a brick wall is the way to go.

Prompts, anyone? Comment fics? (Not necessarily fandom, but I won't turn it down outright. I'm just not *in* any fandoms at the moment.)

Sample - Yesterday I went to get my oil changed. The guy at the autoshop is my age. The guy at the desk is very femme. What if they were a couple....?
salixbabylon: (Default)
Hmmm....

If you had to choose a famous actor to play John Sheppard/Joe Flanigan in a fictional movie, who would you pick? Ben Affleck? George Clooney? Gerard Butler? Gregory Peck?

Suggestions welcome!

(Yes, I'm writing again... Also, if you're newish or just missed this, there's a filter for the new novel I'm slowly working on. It's Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney, AU. Leave me a comment that you want to read and I'll add you.)
salixbabylon: (Default)
I've been wanting to write lately and the Big Story is intimidating me/lost my mojo/whatever. So I think maybe I will do one or two short little babble-drabbles of 1000-5000 words or whatever.

But what to write? Here are your choices:

[Poll #1711949]

Oops, I see I did checkboxes by mistake. So please, for the love of god, only pick a few. ;)
salixbabylon: (sga hot mcshep)
So I finally got enough mojo together to write a little bit yesterday. McKay is going out on his twelve dates, one for each astrological sign. So I looked at the character descriptions for Virgo and they were totally describing Arthur-from-Inception. And I made Rodney go out on a date with Arthur.

But now I think it would be hilarious and amuse me if there were OTHER dates with people from whatever fandoms/shows I'm familiar with, who were perfect examples of certain signs.

This is where you come in:

Tell me what (male) character you think best represents any of the following signs:

cut for descriptions )

Most pop culture/Tv/movie references are fine (RPS too). They don't even have to be a fandom I write in, just characters I know well enough to invite them onto a handful of pages or so, and see how they interact with Rodney. ;)

So go to it - tell me who you think best embodies any or all of the astrological signs!

ETA: So far I've added Viggo Mortensen, Eames, Captn Kirk, Captn Harkness, and John Watson!
salixbabylon: (inception A/E)
1)from [livejournal.com profile] telesilla :

If you were asked to pick one scene, one shot, one detail, one moment of some kind out of all the things I've made and say "This, this, for whatever reason, I remember, this is something that struck home with me, that I wanted to keep," what would it be?

2)I am taking no responsibility for this I was just minding my own business, chatting with [livejournal.com profile] ladykatiewench, and typoed "grocery stores" as "grocery stories."

And then Arthur/Eames vegetable romance happened.

It's been that kind of day.
salixbabylon: (sga hot mcshep)
So I'm writing a thing that's eventually going to grow up to be novel #2. It's Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney, but AU and I'm not sure if I should post it or... not. If I do, I'm pretty much only going to do it here, locked to a small group.

Would anyone be interested in reading as I go along? Because (duh) I like the encouragement of people reading and nudging me, but I'm not actively in the fandom and don't plan to be. So I'm a little uncertain. People do things like have Big Bang preview groups and stuff though, right? This might not be too different?

If you want in on this filtered group, let me know.
salixbabylon: (Default)
Because of course I'm always curious about what readers *want* to read... even if I have no intention of writing it. ;)

Out of curiosity, if I was chained up in your attic/study/basement/library/secret lair, and I had to write you one story, what would you ask for? Or alternately, what's something you always hoped I'd write but think isn't likely to happen?
salixbabylon: (inception A/E)
Recent browser/wikipedia history:

- valet stand
- necktie knots
- necktie construction
- morning coat
- social structures in Britain
- Marks & Spencer

Why yes, I *am* writing Inception fic - however did you guess?
salixbabylon: (personal domme boots)
I was going to pass this long to a friend, but then I thought maybe some of you might be interested in reading it as well.

I totally fangirl Midori, although I don't always agree with her. One thing we share in common is our frustration at what we perceive as "bad" kiny stories - onces where the power exchange truly is unequal and in real life, someone would be bound to get hurt, emotionally if not physically. I was reading her book of essays about kink "Wild Side Sex" in the car as we drove yesterday, and these two really captured the "essence" of a healthy kinky relationship - however short-lived - , in my eyes.

The full text of the book is online at google books: Wild Side Sex From there you can select the chapters: "Pleasure, Pain, Dominance, and Submission" and "Modern Chivalry."

Anyway, just sharing some food for thought, for anyone interested in reading, writing, or just thinking about kinky dynamics.

And as always, I'm up for a discussion, however TMI it might get. :)
salixbabylon: (Default)
All right, I really really really want to write, but I am *so* totally not emotionally ready to start the next big novel-length story. I need to write drabbles and babbles and short things.

So I need your help, dear f-list - PROMPT ME! Give me two characters and a scenario, and/or sexual act, and/or kink, and/or location, and/or position. Get as descriptive as you like.

I will write: porn / humor / kink / any combination thereof.

* SPN-RPS - Jensen, Jared, Jeff
* SGA - John/Rodney (although you may be able to induce me to write team!fic)
* Inception - Arthur/Eames (blame [livejournal.com profile] ladykatiewench - god knows I do)

Time-stamp prompts for stories I've written are welcome. Fandoms not listed above are less likely to entice my muses, but never say never. ;)

Prompt me?

Thanks!

ETA: Forgot to mention other fandoms I've dabbled in - reading at least: Holmes/Watson, Merlin, some bandom, Torchwood... *facepalm* I'm so fickle.

I know other people have written more, faster, blah blah blah, whatever - I'm still impressed with myself.

Some interesting stats =

Idea first conceived: from a post in [livejournal.com profile] ladykatiewench's journal in August 2008.

Document created: August 2009.

Document finished: August 2010.

Word count: 83,104.

Pages in MS Word: 189.

Time between completion of this novel and characters from another novel - who I jotted an idea down for about 6 months ago - poking me into starting some serious notes for their story: 2.5 hours. While I was in the BATHTUB! *facepalm*

I also wrote almost this entire story to a mix of songs by the band Explosions in the Sky. The last four chapters were to Delerium's "Karma" (thanks for [livejournal.com profile] abluegirl for the reminder of how awesome they are).

And now I am going to hide for about a week, if possible, and hold off the new muses with a whip and chair if I have to, while my wrists heal.

from [livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion and [livejournal.com profile] mecurtin:

Jim McDonald did some digging into that "I Write Like" meme, and what he found isn't pretty.

(c/p from his article)

So I went to the I Write Like site, subject of the post just below, and entered this text:

asdp0o pvpm eropms spe pebps.

And it told me I write like James Joyce.

Not even trying? Not even rational! Therefore, I asked myself, what’s the scam? So I looked at the rest of the text on the results page:

Great job! Do you want to get your book published?

“I have personally read through thousands of book proposals in my career as a publisher and agent. I know what these professionals are looking for—and what they are not looking for.”
— Michael Hyatt, Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers.

Learn how to secure a book publishing contract!

That little bit includes two links, both to the same page: http://michaelhyatt.com/products/ebook-writing-a-winning-book-proposal

Yep, it’s SEO. And they’re using social engineering to get those links wide-spread and high in the Google stats. Helpful little cut-n-paste code to put in your blog!

But wait! There’s more!

Go over to that advertised page, and you’ll find a pair of $19.97 e-books by the above-said and afore-mentioned Michael Hyatt. These books promise to tell you such insider secrets as how to “avoid the three items you should NEVER include in a fiction book proposal.” Wow, I can’t wait to find out.

So, who’s Michael Hyatt, and what is Thomas Nelson?

Do you all recall Harlequin, and their recent dip in the vanity pool? Harlequin wasn’t the first or the only formerly-legitimate publisher to go down that road with Author Solutions. No, that honor goes to Thomas Nelson. But, since Thomas Nelson is a “Christian Publisher,” no one noticed at the time. Indeed, Thomas Nelson’s journey to the dark side is even sleazier than Harlequin’s. While Harlequin created a new imprint, “Harlequin Horizons,” as their vanity brand, Thomas Nelson used the name of an existing and formerly legitimate imprint, WestBow, for theirs. Thus, anyone checking up on the publisher’s name before submitting would find a long history of reasonably-selling books by known authors.

This “I Write Like” site isn’t remotely legitimate. No, they aren’t trying; or, anyway, they aren’t trying to analyze writing samples: They’re trying to lure newbie authors to the rocks and shoals of vanity publication.

[livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion adds:

I will also note that there's a "sign up for our awesome newsletter!" box on the side, which says that by doing so you can download FREE a "classic" book on writing by Charles Raymond Barrett -- a book which is, it *doesn't* tell you, also available at Project Gutenberg because it's from 1898.

I *strongly* recommend removing any links and code from "I Write Like" that may be in your posts.

Boost the signal.

Now, I have nothing againt "vanity" publishing - that's how I published my Wanton Hussy book. But I don't like being misled. Furthermore, it sucks that this amusing little idea for seeing what famous author your style most echoes was totally just a random result. It explains why so many of us got wacky results, but still - REAL results would have been interesting!

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Of course, I didn't know who he was, so I had to Google. Interesting.

This was the result from the last chapter of Relationships 201, so then I tried to see if I got different results and pasted in bits from If I Could Rearrange the Alphabet - same thing.

I tried something really old - A Thorough Workout to see if my style has changed over time. It hasn't.

The only one I got something different from was Harry’s Favorite Sandwiches, which said JK Rowling. Not helpful.

I'm going to have to check out this Chuck guy. ;)

ETA: Then I went and pasted in all 4 chapters of "When Work is a Pleasure." Chapter 1 was margaret Atwood, 2 and 3 were HP Lovecraft, and 4 was Stepehen King.

WTF? I'm confused. Also, I have no idea what this even means, as I haven't read anything by any of these people. Huh.

Okay Literature and Art majors - I need your help!

I'm writing a Halloween party where diffreernt rooms are decorated like different versions of Hell. I've got:

Dante’s Inferno
Milton’s Paradise Lost
Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights
William Blake's something

I haven't read Milton. Or Goethe's Dr. Faustus. Neither seem quite right, based on what I've gleaned from Wikipedia.

Help, please? Any well known classical/literary/artistic versions of Hell are welcome!
