The Path to the Force
Although the Jedi Elders never discussed it, a humanoid padawan's clearest path to the Living Force during adolescence was generally through his or her burgeoning sexual urges. Most of them seemed to discover this on their own.
Padawan Jinn was different. He retained a physical decorum that the other students did not. He had always held himself to the highest standards, never willing to accept the need to learn in small steps, demanding perfection right away. If anything, Qui-Gon's fault was a lack of patience and compassion with himself, which had never been an issue in his interactions with others.
He had also so thoroughly suppressed his hormonal urges that Master Dooku was beginning to wonder if his pupil, now fifteen, was physically all right. A boy who could stifle every hint of those desires was not normal. Qui-Gon seemed to have fully embraced the "There is no passion; there is serenity" part of the Code, but lacked the wisdom to know how to interpret the Code less literally. One so young, in the fullest expression of physical urges, should not have been able to suppress them so thoroughly.
By the end of the year, the problem had grown even greater; Qui-Gon could barely access enough of the Living Force for the aerial acrobatics, and he was no longer able to accommodate for that lack with his superior physical skills. He had suppressed his own natural urges for too long, despite being a model student in all other areas.
One evening Master Dooku overheard a group of padawans teasing Qui-Gon for being so aloof and asexual. Although his student seemed unruffled by the jeering and unashamed of his virginity, he could tell that the barbs about Qui-Gon's difficulties with the Force had hit their marks.
He was unsurprised when that evening Qui-Gon came to him and, kneeling in his customary place and posture for asking questions, inquired if it was true, that his difficulties with the Force stemmed from his virginity.
Dooku clarified that the problems were not because the boy was a virgin, but because in his self-denial, he had shut himself off from the currents of the Living Force. In so many roundabout words, he suggested (for the first and only time in Jedi history) that his padawan masturbate, and sent the embarrassed youth off to his rooms.
Three nights passed, with Qui-Gon growing more and more flustered and edgy. Over dinner, Dooku inquired whether he was having physical problems and suggested that perhaps they visit the healers in the next week for an exam.
That night, after an awkward discussion of what such an exam would entail, and spelling out in more and more clear terms that yes, it took more than a few minutes, and that Qui-Gon should just keep at it for a while, it happened. The entire Force signature of their apartments changed. It was all Dooku could do to keep from laughing as his blushing padawan made his way from his bedroom to the 'fresher.
The Force sang happily around them and all was again balanced as it should be.

Date: 2007-07-30 12:40 pm (UTC)No wonder the force was so strong in Anakin. Maybe the reason most Jedi don't marry is that they fear the temptation that comes with such power.

Very sound advice if you ask me. :-)
The entire Force signature of their apartments changed
I can only imagine.

Date: 2007-07-30 11:14 pm (UTC)Just the idea of Qui-Gon being a dutiful, model student and Jedi apprentice is just so wacky -- the Council must have been asking "What went *wrong*?!" in increasingly more distressed tones for the next thirty years.
that yes, it took more than a few minutes, and that Qui-Gon should just keep at it for a while,
Hee! Oh, I can just imagine Dooku's face during this discussion. And Qui-Gon being all big-eyed and earnest. :D

"Padawan, haven't you ever, er, touched yourself."
"Of course Master, in the shower. To get clean."
"No, I meant, in a more self-gratifying way."
*silence*
*thinks "How can you be 15 and never have jerked off????"*
*boggles*
*thinks "Teenagers! So frustrating!"*
*turns to the dark side*

Date: 2007-07-31 03:48 am (UTC)I won't say who told me that, but I know a Real Live Male who confessed to not masturbating for a long time because he just never seemed to get anywhere and gave up.
*I* never had that problem. ;)

Date: 2007-08-07 02:03 am (UTC)Little Jedi come from Big Jedi going out to all the communities in the republic and seeing which children are strong in the Force, from all over the place. I think they're taken before age 3 or something...
Or I could be totally wrong. That's just what I remember reading somewhere, some time. ;)

Date: 2007-08-07 03:48 am (UTC)Probably it works like magic in the HP-universe - having magic parents makes it likely the kids will be magic, but sometimes it just appears or disappears in kids and you get muggle-borns and squibs. Not that there weren't enough Star Wars parallels in HP already - I kept waiting for Voldemort to announce, "Harry, I am your father."

Date: 2007-08-08 08:32 pm (UTC)I like your parallel, of the Force being like magic in the HP world. TOo bad their fighting sticks were so much smaller. ;)
