The Drag Queen Report
Jun. 2nd, 2003 02:22 pmSo on Saturday we all went to Norma Jean's in Castroville, where apparently Marilyn Monroe was crowned Artichoke Queen when she was still Norma Jean.
It was fantastic. Being a whitewhitewhite girl, I felt a little out of place in a bar that was 99.5% Latino, but everyone was so nice. There were hot boys dancing together, older men dancing together, very butch/femme lesbians, het couples, barely-21s and 50 year olds. And EVERYBODY danced. It did my soul so much good to see 40+ year old gay men salsa-ing like pros. I've never been in a bar/club that was filled with so much joy and pleasure and acceptance.
I often feel a bit out of place either a woman or as an in-all-practicality-straight woman in a gay bar, but everyone was so accepting and there was none of that "you're infringing on our space" feeling at all. And I was so impressed by the lack of machismo, which I often (admittedly very stereotypically) associate with Latino men - no one making anyone else feel uncomfortable at all, for any reason.
And the drag queens! They were great. Wigs that weren't too 1970s, decent makeup application, and some were clearly pre-op. It was great to be back in that milieu again.
Oh, how I've missed queer culture... Maybe it's to too late... but then either me or my husband would have to have an ouchie surgery... Poor poor me.
