I don't know if you've seen the British Coupling but the only thing I could think at the beginning was 'Poor Ewan is trapped in the giggle loop' which just made me laugh.
How overwhelmed (if that's the right word) Ewan is by the scene is great. Eric's "punishment" for Ewan laughing at the licorice-like whip works so well especially when it's clear the choice of flogger was deliberate (and he probably expected that kind of reaction). And I love the playful formality he introduces at the end, knowing how formal words and rituals are often difficult for Ewan.
