1. Yesterday my sweetie and I went for a drive up the coast. It was overcast and grey and mostly we just had wacky duscussions, as we do.

As a result, I have two burning questions for you all:

2.
[Poll #1259239]

Feel free to discuss either question in the comments...

3. So I've been watching Dark Angel and I have to say, I think it kind of blows. So I'm bitching and whining as I watch it, and my husband comes into the living room. He also has the same kind of all-the-programs/books/movies-in-order-and-to-the-very-end kind of OCD that I do, and *he* quit DA after season 1. I *skipped* season 1 and am forcing myself to watch season 2, and I only have six episodes left.

G: You do know James Cameron gave up on actually watching this show long before you, right?

me: *waves hands around, trying to explain just how the hotness of Jensen Ackles compels me*

G: Seriously, he's that hot?

me: *nods* Seriously.

G: *looks appalled* You'd do that just for a hot guy?

me: Honey, for you, I tried to understand how to play D&D.

G: Oh. Okay then.

4. And in conclusion, GUH:

Look at that top curve of his ass. I just wanna bite it or lick it or do something to it with my mouth...

I'm right there with you on that ass.
Fuck!

The best episode of Dark Angel is The Beresford Agenda. I don't know if you got there yet. The series isn't great, I watch it on satellite, but only the episodes that Mr. Hotass Ackles is in. Nice that you included a pic of that Hotass. :)

I have seen that one, yes! It's the best for Jensenness, although I did like the shirtlessness in the first 2 eps. And by "like" I mean "nearly died from hotness."

I think the stills of Jensen from the show are really the best parts. ;)

I see that you like the stills of Jensen from DA. I didn't know if you see [livejournal.com profile] raloria's LJ but she has been posting screencaps of DA over there lately. If you haven't here is a link to her most recent one:

Are the first two episodes when he is Ben or Alec?

Ooh - thank you for the links to stills! Yummy! :)

The ep in Season 1 is when he's Ben. He's Alec in all of Season 2. The first ep is when he's introduced to Max as his "breeding partner" and the second is after the manticore blowup, when he's staying in a hotel room. Shirtless and sleezy.

And thoroughly delicious. *rowr*

About the spacing thing - it seems as though it depends on what sort of document you're writing. 'Course, I remember being taught that it's 2 spaces, no matter what.

*shrug*

Yeah, two spaces is what I was taught, too. I guess times change though. All the current style guides I consulted have changed it to one. Bastards.

I think if you learned it one way, you should get to keep doing it that way. Learning to just do one space is *hard*. :P

I've never heard of the two spaces after a colon before I came to America, so I'm convinced it's a cultural thing.

It seems to be an *age* thing, to my dismay. I'm *old*.

Although I'm not surprised it's regional, too. I mean, you all have different sized paper - what else is different? And why?

*boggles*

Hmm, well, for the first question, I guess it depends on what the girl's doing. If she's basically grinding down, then she's fucking him (in my opinion, anyway), but if she's kinda- y'know- riding him, then she's fucking herself. I dunno, it kinda makes sense in my head... =/

As for the spacing... seriously, there are rules? I always used one space, and I never knew it was supposed to be two :s
Hmm...

Yeah, the only reason I watched DA was for Jensen. DA and Days of Our Lives XD
He just makes bad TV better :p

Hehehe - well, ok then. I never thought of different motions having different connotations, but I can sort of see it. :)

I think one space is standard. Unless you were taught it was two spaces. Way back when you were learning to type. On a typewriter. *facepalms* I'm old.

Is Days online somewhere? I'd be interested in clips with him...

The 2 spaces rule is typical for American texts. In Germany, for example, the rule says: use 1 space.

It's interesting that there's an American/European difference to the publishing standard. I wonder how those differences arise...

Thanks for the info! :)

Two spaces after a sentence was the rule due when typewriters and therefore monospaced fonts were the standard. Word processing software is now able to account for the differences in character width. Style manuals included APA, AP, and MLA all specify only one space after a sentence, now. However, many outside of publication still use the two-space convention since it was commonly taught to anyone who learned to type in the 80's or before.

Sorry I can't comment on the rest, since I sort of hate Jensen Ackles, lol.I do remember liking Dark Angel, vaguely, when it was first on.

Ok, I'm old. I checked the current style guides my husband uses in his classes and you're quite right (not that I didn't believe you) - one space. Mine from college (the 1988 edition of the MLA, which I still have and sometimes use) says two spaces.

I'm outdated. *sniffle*

Oh well. I'm going to keep using it outside of publication, then. Take that, you young whippersnappers!

Yeah, we had a drama about this at work recently. Since I am the organization's writer/editor, it was left to me to decide the organization's stance on it. I checked the most recent editions of the style manuals in our library and declared one space after a sentence. Some were not pleased.

I don't think we are much different in age, are we? I have to confess, I never learned about the two space rule. Ever. :/ I felt quite foolish when I was told this was an actual convention. Then again, I learned typing on a computer, no typewriters for me.

I guess it's one of those rule up there with the Oxford comma and appropriate use of semicolons - it seems to be fairly subjective and depend on what you learned at a young age.

I'm 35 and I think you're a few years younger. But maybe it's regional, too, or just different teachers, or following my mom's style standards from when she taught me to type, etc. I think I used typewriters for my papers all through high school, until my final english paper my senior year. Learning to use a word processor in college was a real nightmare for me. ;)

I'm 33, so not too much difference. The school district I attended was *very* gung ho on computers. We had an Apple IIe or something in my classroom starting in 4th grade. I learned to type on a computer in the 6th or 7th grade. All my papers were done on a computer from then on, in the computer labs or when we got one at home in 88 or so. :/

But like someone else said, I think the most important thing is consistency in applying different conventions.

2) I was always taught that it had to be two spaces. It makes it really difficult because I do a lot of editing work and lots of people don't use the two-space rule. So, I correct something and use two spaces and it looks weird and I have to go back and fix MY corrections so it matches the rest of the paper. Of course, on that count, I've always heard that the very most important thing is continuity. It's okay if you don't follow a particular style completely, as long as you do the same thing every time. Eh. I'd rather have both two spaces AND continuity.

3) Well, *obviously* James Cameron gave up before you did. He directed the last episode and it was pretty obvious he never watched the second season. And *of course* you watch something for the pretty. Especially when the pretty is Jensen. And I think that it is very nice of you do deal with his D&D. I was into that for awhile, but couldn't stand playing with guys. They assume that because I'm female that I have no clue what's going on and they spend two hours discussing something that I came up with the solution for after 15 minutes (but they refuse to listen to me). I really like gaming with other women, but there just aren't enough women around to game with. Sigh.

4) I still like the bowlegs best! I love all of his faults more than I love the great parts of him. Bowlegs, wonky eye, big ears, freckles. *loves*

From: [identity profile] salixbabylon.livejournal.com
I agree - consistency is the important thing. ALthough I guess from now on, when I'm editing and betaing, I won't chagne consistent one-spacing to two-spacing. *sigh* Two just looks neater. :P

I do a lot of unusual things just for the pretty that is Jensen. I *would* do even more. *wiggles eyebrows suggestively*

I didn't really try to get into gaming, just watched a few sessions and read a few of the manuals, so I could know WTF he was talking about. I had a few girlfriends who were into gaming and hated most guys' attitudes, too. It sucks that it seems to be so universal.

I adore the bow legs and freckles. I don't really think he has big ears, imo, and I am *mystified* by the "wonky eye" thing. What is that about? *What* wonky eye? Explain? Pretend I'm more clueless than usual.

Date: 2008-09-15 06:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] salixbabylon.livejournal.com
Ok, no, see, I'm still seriously not getting it. I know, I know - it's not funny once it's spelled out but I'm Not Getting It.

Is the wonkiness the way his eyes rotate so much side-to-side and leave no whites in the inner corner when he's looking at something beside him? The eyebrow raise? The white-all-the-way-around wide-eyed look?

The [livejournal.com profile] raloria thing I get, but that's just one picture from goofing around... Is it all just based on that? It seems like more of an ongoing thing, one of his "flaws". And yeah sure, I agree he's not technically-perfect looking, but I'm Just. Not. Getting. the eye thing.

I'm sorry. Try again and tell me what you're seeing in those pictures that's hitting everyone else on the planet as wonky?

Date: 2008-09-15 07:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] softbluebuddy.livejournal.com
First of all, let me go on record as saying that he is perfect just the way he is. I am in no way discounting his looks because I seriously have such a Dean/Jensen crush you have no idea. I'd love him no matter what his eyes are doing, and I really don't notice it when I am watching the show, only when raloria and moondropz slow it down and do the screen caps thing.

I only jumped in to bring you links because *you* asked about the wonky eye and I remembered there was the posts specifically calling it a wonky eye. I personally would never make fun of someone for having something like a wonky eye or some other physical characteristic beyond their control.

The raloria thing, I agree she called it the Eyeball of Doom I believe and it is him joking around, but I think he can make it move to the outer corner of his eye at will and combined with the eyebrow raise.

But the ones in moondropz LJ 3 posts called Wonky Eye I think she is pointing out that they don't track together. Like if a person was looking straight ahead both eyeballs would be in about the exact same position in the eye socket. There are lots of examples where one of his eyes is in the middle and the other is either closer to the center or closer to the edge. An asymmetry if you will.

Seriously, it doesn't detract from his gorgeousness to me in any way shape or form and I never even notice it unless someone makes a post or three and calls it the *wonky eye* post. Never noticed till then, and all I had was, 'huh'.

Does that make any sense?

Thank you! That's exactly what I needed. "they don't track together" - I was just not seeing that at all. It somehow wasn't registering that that was notable.

Maybe *my* eyes are wonky too. ;)

Thank you! I've been wondering and asking about this for *months* and just never ever saw it. I get it now. I mean, I didn't realize it was unusual at all, but I at least know what y'all are talking about. I was just writing it off as weird camera angels and candid/capped-photo-strangeness.

Anyway - THANK YOU! I know it's a silly thing to have been twisted up about, but it was really bothering me that I could not figure out what on earth was so strange about those pictures.

OMG - I typed "y'all" without even noticing.

One space, girl! ONE.

*grins*

When I beta for you, I put on the spell checker, and half the document lights up in red because you use two spaces. Same way, I can always see where you've split up my endless sentences when you beta for me... two spaces, shows up as an error ;)

Well, from the comments above, apaprently two spaces is 1) american and 2) old-fashioned. I learned to type on a typewriter! The style guide I used in college says two spaces! It's not my fault!

*pouts*

I won't correct yours in the future. Just don't go changing mine. ;)

Don't worry so much about correcting mine - like I said, I usually catch them if they bug me. And I've never changed yours, not after that first time when I realized you'd done this in the entire document. I wrote it off as an American thing ;)

For me, it's the shoulders/chest/back... I want my hands ALL OVER that action.

Oh and the spacing sentences thing? Double-space is for drafts/editing. Single space is published work.

Okay, after reading other comments, I'm confused. Are we talking spaces after punctuation, or spaces between lines on a page? My answer was to lines on a page.

The shoulders and waist and back *are* hot. But I confess in that picture, the way his shirt folds draws me eyes to his ass. Which it was going to check out anyway, it just focused on it *first* this time. Because yeah, I want my hands all over that action, too. ;)

The spacing questions was regarding the spaces between sentences. This is one._This is two.__This is none.

It wasn't very clearly worded, sorry.
