See what I mean - it's a Beat movie! The most Beat of all the allegedly Beat movies I've ever seen! It was just like reading a Beat novel, except there was Ewan, looking oh so very doable at every turn, even when covered in coal dust. And doing the ladies everywhere he goes. The one in the alley was particularly "oh my god I can't believe he did that is there nothing this man won't do to drive us wild".

And then there's the custard...

See, I know you're kidding, but I really think there's a lot more going on in Joe's head than the film really wants to deal with. I mean, I can understand being a frustrated writer (duh). I can see having sex because you're bored. I see thinking Ella is interesting, and there being some sexual tension between them.

I *cant* see fucking a woman you dislike, in the alley, just because she thinks you should fuck her, when she's not even enjoying it and complains immediately after.

I understand the weirdness of the custard scene, kind of... but I don't get the *why* of it. She's being kind of a bitch, he's being an ass, he throws custard at her, she goes into sub mode and gets her even more dirty... And spanks her, with something that *had* to hurt, but she doesn't make any sounds and you never see her face. He fucks her, and she seems like she's crying and then like she's into it, but he seems annoyed the whole time, disgusted even, from beginning to end.

The dirty was good, and the extended scene was ... well, I have no words. ;) And all the other good sexy bits you mentioned...

But Joe's a complex guy. I would have liked a bit more revealed about his motivations. Why did he leave Cathy, why did he fuck Ella's sister, why did he not follow up on the note when the wrong man was condemned to death, and what's he going to do now?

I guess I liked it, or I wouldn't be thinking about it so much.
