Slash Interests and Writing Timeline

I'm mostly doing this for my own purposes – I'm sure the rest of you will find it boring. I have had several occasions where I was trying to piece together when I became interested in a new fandom or why or when I wrote a fic, and wanted to make myself a post where it was all in order. Given that it took me about an hour to get the dates right, I'm going to add this to my LJ so I can find it later. ;)



Discovery - Harry Potter
I first discovered slash the first week of May 2002, from an article in the SF Chronicle, and then I did a Google search on "harry draco slash" and the first hit was a recs list. It was alphabetical by author, so the very first slash I ever read was Ailei's The Devil Wants.

Which pretty much totally broke my brain. I was obsessed. Honestly, and in a bad way.

Then I had an ovulation thingy in August, and first conceived of some part of Virulentus Somnium since I couldn't sleep and was in agonies of pain. Was just obsessed with the characters. I started writing and didn't finish until spring 2003.

I started emailing betas and talking to people in the HP fandom for the first time ever in September 2002, and then got an LJ in April 2003.

Branching Out
I loved the LOTR movies when they came out in 2001 and 2002, but had no interest in the blond elf guy; I was far more swoony over that dirty Ranger. :)

In July 2003, POTC came out and it was OMG fantastic, and who is that really cute British guy? He can't possible be an elf – no way! And then I started talking to lostiawen (who I know in RL) about it, and she admitted she had read some slash (hahaha), and she gave me recs for POTC slash.

I loved it and then got curious about LOTR (FPS only at this time) and asked her for recs in that fandom, which she also gave. And I loved it too.

And eventually, she also got me hooked on LOTR-RPS. Took me a while to get into, but I loved it too.

(Never got quite as obsessive about any of it as I was about HP, though. Which is good, because well, for a lot of reasons, really.)

Anyway. I think I tried writing my own POTC fic a few months later, still in summertime, maybe August or September.

Had a huge plot-bunny bite me at (during!) my 30th birthday party, which turned into chapter 1 of Educational Endeavors. And it's all been a downhill slide into RPS since then. ;)

I think the experience I had writing for the Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest really turned me off. I think I felt like people were snarky and really into the BNF thing, and didn't appreciate the efforts of anyone new.

Granted, I don't think my writing at that time was particularly good, but there was almost no feedback. The two stories that I wrote that I really was proud of got hardly any fb (like 3 emails), and the ones I thought were total crap got more (about 10) but from people who were practically incoherent, full of l33t NetSp33k. Feedback in general in the HP fandom seemed pretty minimal.

But with the other fandoms, I started posting to my LJ and to Yahoo!Groups and got actual responses from people! Boy what a difference that made! (I do think that my lack of knowledge about how that whole thing worked, and only posting to archives, had a lot to do with my disenchantment with the HP fandom. Which was sort of my own fault for being clueless about how fanfic worked.)

I have first comment yeah!!! I started out in the HP fandom also. Then I saw Orlando as Legolas and I was sunk. I honestly never looked back either. I read every single one of your stories and I loved all of them. I didnt know much about feed back back then, but I know it now. You do not give yourself enough credit. They were all fantastic. I saw the titles and I remembered them(funny how the memory works). So a belated thank you they were wonderful! Now I am going back and reading them again.

And thank you for the praise! I tend to think of my HP stuff as not so good, but I'm probably not able to look at it objectively. Also, since it never got much/any FB, I figured it sucked.

*harump* My goal originally was to try to put out one fic per month... So far, that is totally not happening. :(

Kink? Bondage? Spanking? I was thinking puppies and mpreg and tearful declarations of eternal love. Well poop. If you say kink, kink it shall have to be.
