The first time Craig saw David reading a book on set, he'd done a double-take. It wasn't a script or a magazine, not even a cheap paperback, but a huge hard-covered tome that must have weighed at least five pounds. No lurid cover for a first edition fantasy novel even, but an actual serious-looking book.
Craig thought about going over and asking the newcomer what he was reading, but he was so absorbed he didn't even look up as Craig approached. So he walked on past, feeling somehow a little affronted, a little put-out; who did this new bloke think he was, anyway, reading a book like that, some professor or something? Whatever. Craig walked over to some people he knew and talked to them instead.
A few weeks later, Craig came upon pretty much the same scene, only this time it was a different book and David was wearing eyeglasses. Last time the book had been a deep oxblood red; this time it was light brown leather. Craig didn't stop to think why he'd notice such idiotic details. This book was also a little bit thinner in pages, but it was quite a bit larger in size, filling David's hands, spread wide, fingers flexing as he held the book up.
Craig found his thoughts wandering to the size of David's hands through the rest of the day, and the strength in those fingers.
The next time Craig saw David reading a book it was completely unacceptable. They were having a catered picnic of sorts, a small impromptu party for finishing that day's work early on all three sets. Everyone, cast and crew, had gotten together to celebrate the lingering summer, and instead of talking with his mates like everyone else was, David was sitting off in the corner reading another damn book.
Dark green binding, rather small, cradled in David's hands possessively, fingers obscuring the title stamped in flecks of silver. Disgusted at the man's anti-social behavior, Craig abruptly turned his back and stalked away.
It was strictly on impulse a few days later that Craig followed David into the local library. He'd been making his way to a street-side coffee vendor for a latte, when he recognized David, from a distance. Craig bypassed the latte in favor of stalking his prey.
He stealthily trailed behind as David returned several books and then entered the stacks to wander amongst the shelves. David clearly knew where he was going, as he quickly made his way to the 600 section, which Craig didn't recognize at all, other than that they were in the non-fiction area. He was one shelf over, peering through the gaps in the shelves, spying on David and feeling more than a bit silly.
He couldn't quite make out what subject the other man was looking at, but some of the spines of the newer books looked familiar. He squinted to read the titles and they explained why he'd recognized them – "The New Joy of Gay Sex," "Ultimate Gay Sex," "The Gay Man's Kama Sutra," and so on. Interspersed between these were leather-bound books with a more academic air, which also looked familiar, if only from a distance.
At the shocked squeak that Craig made, David jumped and turned around, dropping the book he'd just pulled off the shelf. He bent down and looked through the gap in the shelves that Craig has previously been peeking through and blue eyes met blue.
"What are you doing here?"
"Would you believe I was looking at..." Craig glanced at the titles in front of his nose, "...books on landscaping?"
David game him a look that said he clearly would not believe such a preposterous story.
Craig shrugged. "I wanted to see what you were reading all the fucking time."
"You couldn't just ask?"
Another shrug. "You seemed... I don't know, absorbed," Craig said, trying to project some of his disdain for David's aloofness.
David snorted. He gave Craig a long look before he finally answered. "I was doing research."
Craig snorted back. "What kind of research?"
He was answered with a sly grin he never would have expected to see on David's face. "Well, I recently discovered someone I might be attracted to," David answered slowly. "He's tall, blond sometimes, about your age, about your build... But I've never been with a man before. Or at least not done everything I find myself thinking about doing with him. Often. At inappropriate times, even." David held Craig's gaze through his quiet speech, amusement and uncertainty and a bit of a challenge in his eyes.
Craig looked away and licked his lips. A sudden flare of lust explained his obsession with this enigmatic man and his irritation that David was so unapproachable, so aloof all the time.
"However, since I've never shagged a bloke before, I thought I'd do some research on the topic," David continued, "and try to figure out if it was really something that appealed to me before I made any overtures to him."
Craig grinned. "Perhaps I could be of assistance."
David grinned back. "I was hoping maybe you could be. After all, there's only so much you can learn from reading books."
