So I have some smutty files I'd like to share. But they are 100-200+MB. Zipping and RARing them don't make them any smaller.

How can this be? Isn't that what ZIP and RAR *do*?

How do I share these files? Mediafire and other places seem to have a 100MB limit. (I haven't tested them all, but I'm assuming the free places are all similar.)

I got them as zipped downloads from various of you on LJ - how do I share them back?

Zipping or RARing can only substantially decrease file sizes if the original file is not already compressed, which is why it is useful to zip .txt, .doc, .bmp or .wav files for instance, but not so much for .mpg, .jpg or .mp3.

I'm a bit surprised that there is a 200Kb+ limit on how big shared files can be. mp3-blogs routinely uploads mp3s up to 10 Mo without any problems. I assume they do not all have paid accounts.

Rapidshare allows files up to 200 Mo for instance.

Have you tried Megaupload? They allow you to upload 1024MB apparently, although I've never tried that much. There's also no download limit with them, which helps.

I'd also use megaupload, that works pretty well for me. (Sendspace won't let me download anything, for instance, which is rather annoying.)

Also, if you're having trouble uploading big files, you might want to use winrar to split them up into smaller ones. If you look into the options, there should be one that will let you split an archive in for example 100Mb pieces. Once people downloaded them all they only need to extract the first one and they'll piece themselves together again automatically. It's pretty nifty. :)

was going to suggest megaupload, but that's already up there. when i send really big things i use pando, but not everyone wants to download the program. but it'll take full films and send them at less than a meg links. takes forever to load though.

Well, everything seems to take at least an hour and a half per file anyway. It's good to have more options - I'll give that program a try if I do this with any frequencey. Thanks for suggesting it! :)

oh, an alternative since mediafire pretty much works for everyone i know :P if you .rar it, you can actually split the files into 2 or more parts which allow you to upload it to mediafire :D
