I feel a bit silly for asking this, but I'm going to ask anyway.

I've seen a lot of fics (especially long ones) with "soundtracks" lately. And I thought "oh cool - I'm writing a long fic and maybe I could make one." And then I started gathering possible songs, and, well. Now I'm wondering if there's some process or guidelines or strategy for doing this of which I am unaware.

Have any of you ever made or been involved in making a fic soundtrack?

How did you do it?

Help?

I've made soundtracks before, not for fics, but for a pairing. I always just go with what feels right. Screw what everyone else thinks should be on there.

(just be careful with using songs that end up on tons of soundtracks...snow patrol and the like....use 'em if you want, of course. But make sure that it fits your fic and not just a generic angsty song)

Hehe, totally. I d/led a ton of soundtracks from the BigBang fics and I think I have a dozen copies of a few of the same songs. :P I'll be careful not to include stuff that's way overplayed.

Which shouldn't be difficult, since I'm trying to only use songs from 2000-2003 anyway. We'll see. :)

Hehehehehe!

Well, if it helps (which I'm sure it doesn't), it's the scene I'm currently writing. But it won't be posted for a while, so that's rather like just more teasing.

Sorry. I'm not so much bisexual in practice as I am a relentless and non-gender-discriminating tease. ;)

I don't think there are any guidelines to making a soundtrack. I'll usually just put everything in there that I listened to while writing the fic, plus maybe songs I reference in the fic. If you want to, you can order it chronologically (story wise), as usually you have different types of music for different parts of a story.

When I listen to fic soundtracks, I'll usually just put them on repeat in the background while reading a fic, so for me it's mostly about getting into the same mood the author was in.

Yeah, that's sort of what I suspected. I'm a weirdo in that I can't really write and listen to anything with words. I'll figure it out somehow though, maybe one "theme song" per chapter. :)

I wrote a fic that had just one song in it, I am sure that is not what you are referring to, but then I linked that one song at the bottom.

I was thinking mroe along the line of the Big Bang fics, with 10-20 songs, and how do people choose those songs... But I'll figure it out. :)

I made three soundtracks for Antithesis. They were the music I was listening to as I wrote it.

See, I just don't listen to music as I write... Unless by "writing" you mean "driving in the car with music on, thinking about the story, and sometimes nearly getting in accidents trying to scribble down notes." (Unless I've remembered my handheld cassette recorder, circa 1990, in which case my driving is mostly safe.) Although I *do* do a fair amount of that.

I'll just have to take note of what songs triggered what plot ideas. :)
