Randomish question for the Brits on my list (or anyone else who gets BBC tv):

What's the general attitude towards the program "BBC Horizon"? Is it well-respected or generally regarded as hokey crap?

Inquiring minds want to know!

generally it's quite respected, but sometimes it does make the odd clanger. I'd say it's on a case by case basis.

Why do you ask?

My husband's thinking of using a bit from it in one of his classes and wanted some public-opinion for context.

Thank you!

20-30+ years ago it was probably the best general science documentary programme in the world. It's still generally good, but these days (I think since the BBC hooked up with Discovery) it has been dumbed down a lot. They used to know how to make the programmes both comprehensible and fascinating to everyone, but these days they are so repetitive, and sometimes so shallow, that they are often too irritating to watch at all.

It may well still be the best, but it's not a patch on what it used to be.

Thanks for coming over and sharing your thoughts! My husband's thinking of using a bit from it in one of his classes and wanted some public-opinion for context.

Much appreciated!

Mmm, I'd tend to agree - years ago it was a well-respected, factual, (mostly scientific) un-biased programme that brought to life issues of the day.

Recently (although like an awful lot of TV programmes, I suppose) it has been dumbed-down quite a bit, but it's still very topical, so while it's certainly not in any way "hokey crap" it's not the true philosophical stuff it used to be!

Hope that helps a little . . .

So it's been made more palatable to the masses... That's too bad, but hopefully it's reacing mroe people, at least. As I said my husband's thinking of using a bit from it in one of his classes and wantedto know what people thought of it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
