Awkward
It had to happen sooner or later, Jensen supposes, given that it’s a fairly small town and this is pretty much the main grocery story for everyone on or near campus. He wishes that he and Jeff weren’t covered with dried sea-spray and sweat, but it’s not like you ever get to choose these moments.
“Hey Jensen,” Jared says, smile huge as he waves a little bit from the end of the aisle.
“Hey Jared,” he says, also waving stupidly, and then cringing as Jeff turns around from his perusal of the ingredients in various brands of barbecue sauce. He squirms a little as Jared approaches, running his hand through salt-stiffened hair and wishing he could do the same to Jeff’s without looking like some kind of huge freak. Not that Jared doesn’t already know he’s a huge freak, but still.
“Uh, Jeff, this is Jared. Jared, this is Jeff.” He very carefully doesn’t say ”my ex-boyfriend” or ”that professor I was obsessed with all last semester”. Neither of them are idiots; they’ll figure it out.
They shake hands, Jeff looking calm and confident; Jared looking thoughtful. Then he grins at Jensen. “Didn’t you used to be hotter? What the hell have you been doing?”
Jensen smacks him on the shoulder without thinking, and then gets self-conscious about touching Jared so casually and stutters for a minute.
Before he can get his tongue around an answer, Jeff snorts and says “Kayaking. We spent the afternoon out and stopped on our way back home. And yeah, trust me; Jen usually looks much prettier.”
Not sure which of them to hit, Jensen clears his throat and asks pointedly, “So, how are things going? Classes okay? You still going to graduate this spring?”
“Yup. With no small thanks to you – I really appreciated your help before finals, you know. You’re gonna make a great teacher.”
Jensen preens a little at that and nods his thanks, and when he looks up, Jeff is smirking. “Shut up,” he says, even though Jeff hasn’t said a word.
“So, how was it? I’ve never been kayaking,” Jared asks Jeff, and the two of them hit it off, talking about the similarities and differences between kayaks and surfboards. Jensen totally should have known it would be no big deal; they’re both pretty easy-going guys, and even if there had been a horrible breakup or whatever, probably the two of them would still be mellow about running into each other.
It’s weird though, seeing his ex and his current together. Jared’s still gorgeous, still funny and charming and laughs easily. He’s still pretty smart, and he’s probably still great in bed.
But standing next to Jeff? There’s not a doubt in Jensen’s mind that things worked out the way they were supposed to. Jeff is just Jeff, and he just fits Jensen better than Jared did. It’s kind of too bad he and Jared aren’t friends, that they haven’t seen each other since that one time during finals week. But there’s no residual animosity, at least not on Jensen’s part. And Jared’s never been the kind of guy to harbor resentment, especially over things that weren’t anybody’s fault. And he was the one who broke up with Jensen anyway, so if someone’s going to be bitchy about it, it should be Jensen.
He refocuses on the conversation, which has morphed into a very serious discussion about barbecue sauces, Jeff telling Jared about what he should be looking for on the labels, and Jared practically taking notes. Jensen tries hard not to grin as he thinks about the chances of Jared actually cooking anything that needs barbecue sauce, and has to bite his tongue when Jared puts a small bottle in his basket.
“When did you learn to cook?” Okay; maybe he should have bitten his tongue a little harder.
Jared sticks his tongue out. “Fuck off; you can’t cook either, unless Jeff’s been teaching you.”
Jeff shakes his head, laughing at them both, and turns to head toward the checkout counters. Jared isn’t subtle about taking in the rear view, and Jensen’s never going to turn down a chance to ogle Jeff’ ass either.
“Damn,” Jared says appreciatively, slapping him on the shoulder. “You bagged the hot teacher.”
Jeff has really good hearing, and wiggles his ass a little bit. He turns the corner, and while Jensen can’t see his face, he knows that giggle.
He’s still smiling when Jared lets go of his shoulder, although not for long. Jared’s got a strange expression on his face, the puppy-dog-eyes one.
“It’s good to see you,” he says, trying desperately to cut Jared off from whatever he’s going to say that will probably be really awkward. “I’m glad things are going so well.”
Jared nods, biting his lip, and then nods again. “Yeah. I’m really glad you’re doing well too, man. I know things ended kind of badly, but I hope I’m right that there aren’t any hard feelings. I wanted to thank you, you know, for everything. The school stuff, but other stuff too. I learned a lot from being with you.”
Wow, Jensen really hopes it wasn’t all cautionary life-lessons, and he wants to ask if what Jared learned was that he didn’t like guys and was actually straight, but he doesn’t. He just nods. “Me too. It was good for a long time. Thanks for that,” he says and feels like a total loser when he touches Jared on the arm.
Luckily, Jared’s always been a little less concerned about looking like a dork, and he wraps his still-too-long arms around Jensen and tries to break his ribs with a bear hug.
When they separate Jared’s got a huge grin on his face, clearly very pleased with himself for nearly strangling his ex-boyfriend in public. Jensen’s trying to relocate his dignity, when Jeff calls from the end of the aisle.
“You coming home with me or what?” His smile is mellow, and it’s subtle, but Jensen sees a hint of possessiveness in Jeff’s eyes, which he loves.
He grins back, punches Jared on the shoulder again, and turns to head toward Jeff. “I’m coming with you.”
