Sometimes I see you guys and I think "Ah, sarka, I met her through Harry Potter originally" or "Ah, nverland, I met you through LOTR-RPS." But some of you, I have no idea how we first hooked up.

Maybe you are so new I don't know you very well yet, or maybe you are a many years old LJ-friend and I just can't remmeber our initial point of connection.

Help me out? I'm in a nosy/curious mood. :)

Also, HELP - does anyone else use LJ Archive? I've used it every week to back up my LJ (which is the *only* place my fic lives) for the last few years, and two weeks ago it simply stopped working. I can't figure out if it's on my end, Livejournal's end, or LJ Archive. Anyone?

Or, alternately, anyone got a different program that they use to back up their LJ? I'm open to new suggestions if I can't get LJ Archive to work...

I've used archive, but I haven't for a bit, need to. Has it been having issues? And like what? Is it maybe something they're still trying to fix from the last falling apart they had?

I get weird error messages during the snyc. I think it might be my DSL, since husband can't get it to work on a different computer, different LJ account, but people have commented below that they're not having any problems at all. IDEK. Stupid computers. :P

You have a dreamwidth account, don't you? You can copy all data from here onto there through a transfer program they have. I remember doing that when I first opened the thing.

Sorry I can't help about the archive. I use the import function over on DW to bring over entries, but I only do it about once a year since I don't post much.

You can import at any time. I think you can give it a date range so that you don't keep importing the same entries over and over.

It also brings over all the comments - at least it did the last time I tried.

I can't remember!! I'm mostly a LoTR gal, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I was sent this way after reading either a Ewan fic or a John / Rodney fic . . . it's lost in the mists of time, but all I can say is I'm grateful that I''m here!!

I've never looked at LJ archive, but I make a book of my journal every six months or so, by using this site:

I've used LJ Archive to back up my fic without problem. What kind of issue are you running into?

If you're looking for a place to back up your fic, might I suggest AO3? They have a useful import tool that you can use to read your fic journal entries.

I get this error every time:

The weird thing is that sometimes the entries will sync, but never the comments. I've gone through every entry since the last good one, all the comment on the last month, and there's almost never anyhting at line 105 at all, and no unmatched img tags anywhere. I even deleted a comment with images in it, in case it was the problem.

Argh. With all the DOS attacks, I'm a little paranoid about losing the last 8 years of my life. Maybe I should uninstall the whole application and start over from scratch...

That's odd - I've never had a problem with ljArchive. Maybe download a newer version?

Another option is to create a dreamwidth account. There's an option to automatically import the whole of your journal (comments included, i think) to their site. I did that, as a back up.

I will try that, seeing if there's a newer version and reinstalling it. I think my sweetie might have broken something when he was cleaning up misc old software that he thought might be slowing down my processor...

I do have DW - can you import/sync at any time or just on creation? Or I could stop bothering you and go look myself. ;)

You can import to DW at any time, not just at account creation :)

The break up was long enough ago now that I have arrived at the happy things :)

(I *think* that if you want to update your import every now and then, DW will import all the new entries and comments for you, and keep this journal up to date. I've not tested this process out. Cross-posting, from DW to LJ, works very smoothly.)
